Frustration and Struggle is a Sign of Learning – Perturbation

The Continuous Pursuit of Excellence

Some of you are familiar with the term perturbation. One of the ingredients of growth is pressure. If we’re going to grow, we tend to get under pressure.

So, all this new knowledge and all these new things that you need to do is a pressure. And that pressure has got to release somehow because it’s energy coming into you. It’s new ideas, new potential, new expectations. And that energy has got to release.

Well, our emotions are the energy in motion. So when we get frustrated or angry or just anxious, that’s that release of emotion on that. And that’s normal.

Perturbation is the feeling of anxiety and stress and confusion. It’s any of that energy that hasn’t really found its place yet. And it’s the discomfort that comes with the learning process, the growth process. We call that discomfort, we call that stress, that anxiety, that that feeling of pressure, perturbation.

And we give it a word because, well, that’s the first kind of way to help with emotions is label them. But the beautiful thing about perturbation is that it’s a sign of progress. It’s a feeling of stuckness and overwhelm; it is a sign of progress.

Now you receive growth because you guys know that things won’t make sense. And then all of a sudden, they will. If you guys are going through that perturbation, at some point something’s going to break and you’re going to have a breakthrough.

Now what I would encourage is something’s going to break. And that may mean that you break and you say I’m done. I can’t handle this anymore. Which is a quitting. Or, or what breaks is whatever is getting in the way of making that leap forward, that breakthrough.

And it is a process. And anything that you work with Maria and me and my team on is going to create that perturbation is going to cause that need to break. And the idea is, is if what we want on the other side is powerful enough and aligned to what we’re after and our growth goals, then that breakthrough will be a positive event that will lead to a whole ‘nother level of performance.

But we got to break with some of the things that we’re currently doing or our bad habits that we’ve gotten into, or just habits that are counterproductive to where we want to go.
